 Human resource management challengers during Covid 19 pandemic



Covid19 was declared a global health emergency by the WHO in January 2022. Sri Lanka was lock down several time.

This lock down is a crucial challenge to manage HR in an organization. It creates unpredictable situations in the both public and private sector.

HR’s role in crisis management is to enhance preparedness among personal and ensure effective disaster planning.

Human resource manager should have the ability to analyses the risk and ability to deal with the risk. It highly influences on the pre plans of preparation, prevention and reaction of organization.

To effectively deal with a crisis, should build up employees’ capacity to negotiate with the severe disasters by equipping them with the knowledge.

HR Manager should be broadening the role to following sectors, communication and employee relations, policy and process managements, employee skills and information tracking, training and development, employee service and benefit program, talent and succession planning (Mangaleswaram, 2020).

HRM Challengers

01)   Organization has to take the responsibility of employee safety, travel restrictions, splitting working arrangement taking measure to boost employee welfare. It is their responsibility to provide protective equipment.

Establishing a suitable communication channels and tools to monitor a remote working procedure. It is essential to keeping the employee engaged with the works.

Organization adapted different attendance practices of them change their practices from finger machine to manual procedures.  This is a big challenge for HR manager in public sector than private sector. In private sector workers, attendance become a key factor for the self-motivation.

02)   Covid 19 crisis affect to employee’s mental health, economy and social interaction during and after the lock down situation.

03)   In this situation, rewards were less motivated for employees. But transportation, meals, safety equipment, health and sanitary facilities pays avital role in motivation.
